Jessica, a 10 year-old Bay City, Michigan, native at the time this project was started, was diagnosed with chronic kidney failure in the fall of 2012. Her mother, Stacey, took to the streets to hold up signs to passing strangers asking them to get tested as possible organ donors, getting the attention of the local paper.

The community immediately began following Jessica's story after the first articles in the Bay City Times, which also caught the attention of a local businessman who would eventually be Jessica's donor.
